This beautiful drawing in a forthcoming auction is signed – Orpen ’99.

However, the signature looks like it was added at a later stage and the auctioneer is clearly concerned as there is no mention of the artists name.

Orpen usually signed his full name in that era, mind you, the lady looks like Emily Scoble and she modeled for Orpen while they both attended the Slade Art School, London. She featured in ‘The Mirror’ 1900 – (Tate) among other Orpen paintings.

A drawing with the same name and dimensions was sold for £190 in Bonham’s, London on 29th September 1977 and they listed it as – ‘attributed to William Orpen’.
